Climate change is scary. There’s no better medicine to alleviate one’s anxiety than to wake up every morning knowing you’re doing your best to fix it. The electricityMap team, part of Tomorrow, is hiring a data engineer to help us build and maintain a scalable data pipeline and database that forms the foundation of our mission to accelerate the energy system to a zero-carbon future.
At electricityMap, we maintain a database and pipeline that ingests real-time data in order to power a popular open-source project and commercial API used by companies, universities, NGOs, and policy-makers (including some heads of state!) around the world every day to understand and reduce the climate impact of the electricity grid.
In your role, you’ll be making sure the quality and availability of our data is stellar by building and improving our data infrastructure, as well as managing our internal tools. You will also be responsible for managing our machine learning pipeline at scale. We’re a small team, so you’ll be owning a lot of your own work and initiatives, but we will be there to support you!
Our team works from across Europe and out of an office in Copenhagen. You’re welcome to work from Copenhagen, but you’re also welcome to work from anywhere in Europe as long as you’re prepared to visit Copenhagen (or other offsite locations!) several times each year.
You are welcome at Tomorrow for who you are, no matter your background or what you look like. We believe that it’s in our differences that we will find the power to solve one of the biggest challenges of our time.
At Tomorrow, we’re building tech products that address the climate crisis. We’re a venture capital-backed company that was founded 4 years ago with the creation of electricityMap. You can read more about our mission here.
Tomorrow is made up of two autonomous product teams, electricityMap, which already has had a meaningful impact on reducing carbon emissions thanks to our open-source approach and our partnerships with organizations like Google, and Bloom, which is building a solution to help organizations measure, understand and reduce their carbon footprint.
We’re facing increasing demand for our data and insights, and to meet this demand we need to improve our data pipeline and other infrastructure. Your job will be to enable this by:
Building large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines with data processing frameworks like Spark, Apache Beam and the Google Cloud Platform
Driving optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality and ensure reliability
Collaborating with other software engineers, ML experts and community experts to ensure that electricityMap delivers the most accurate data
We’re looking for a purpose-driven and empathetic data engineer who is comfortable with autonomy and tackling challenging problems that will help the world understand and reduce its emissions.
Your personality, breadth of experience and your hunger to learn means more than years of experience. Even if you don’t fullfill all the skills listed below, do apply!
As the ideal future teammate, you
Know how to work with and process high volumes of time series data
Are knowledgeable about data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques
Have experience deploying and maintaining data pipelines in the cloud
Have experience deploying and testing machine learning models at scale
Are detail-oriented and organized
Knowledge about the power system is not required, although it would be a plus.
We can’t wait to hear from you!
Tomorrow is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, or age.
