Matter’s mission is to make capital work for people and the planet. We are a Danish fintech company with an office located in the heart of Copenhagen and an international culture.
We are looking for an experienced back-end / data engineer who wants to advance and strengthen an analytical tool for sustainable finance. We imagine you are an experienced back-end or data engineer, who is used to working with event-driven flows and microservices, and generally have an open and non-dogmatic approach to software development. If you are looking for a job full of purpose, we are a passionate team of friendly engineers, economists, creatives and social scientists who can’t wait to meet you.
Your role in the context of Matter
You will be working collaboratively with the rest of the engineering team to develop our core services. Our core is responsible for processing information about the sustainability of companies and governments that issue stocks and bonds. Because of this, we process large amounts of very different data, and it is key for us to balance stability and scalability, with the needed agility and speed of development to adjust with a constantly changing world of sustainable finance. Our clients are pension funds and banks who use our service to understand the sustainability of their investments and make better decisions. You will be a key driving force behind development of new services and maintenance of existing architecture, meaning that you will ideally be considered as a senior developer within our organization.
How we work
We plan 3-4 months ahead with the OKR framework and split projects into smaller, self-contained packages of work, which we monitor with weekly retrospectives and a kanban/scrum board. Projects are encouraged to stay small to enhance our agility and speed of delivery. Although we work to enforce structure, the fact that we are a start/scale-up means that you will have to handle yourself well in changing and ambiguous situations - and help co-create and ideate. Of course, our working language is English.
Your profile
You are well-versed in an event-driven flow of data between loosely coupled microservices, and you know how to bring the appropriate tools into play when building ETL pipelines. This means that you also have an understanding of when and where less complex, perhaps more conventional approaches have their clear business value. You are capable of taking initiative on new systems or components and prefer short build cycles with quick iterations from POC to beta and from beta to fully functioning services.
Your skills and experience
During our interviews, we will gauge where you have your strengths and where you might need some help. This means that we are open to different variations of experience and expertise within the field of back-end development and data engineering. We imagine that you have +3 years of relevant professional experience, and that your skills and experience center around the following topics:
What you are good at:
Building ETL pipelines
Working and building in event-based microservice architectures
Python and/or Java
SQL or NoSQL databases
Building RESTful APIs
You should be comfortable with developing towards (or already be good at):
Testing and monitoring your code
Deploying your own software
Building CI/CD pipelines
Help defining and working towards an MVP of your product
It is extra nice if you are also knowledgeable about:
Infrastructure as code
The AWS ecosystem
K8s
API management
